Hotels and Personal Injuries

30/07/2021

Everyone is looking to travel right about now. Summer is getting into full swing, and whether you are looking to see a distant land or reacquaint yourself with familiar faces, you’re probably planning your next big adventure, too. Besides the normal precautions, like ensuring home security while you’re away, or booking some travel insurance, you should also think about your safety as a guest in a hotel.

Here are some of the most common injuries that can happen at hotels and motels, and what you can do to avoid them. If the worst happens, and you find yourself injured on vacation, make sure you get in touch with a team or trusted lawyers. Most likely, the hotel will be liable for your accident, and you could be eligible for compensation.

  • Security Related Harm

Wherever you are, it is a good idea to keep your wits about you. There is a tendency for vacation goers to let their guard down. This can be due to overconsumption of alcoholic beverages, unfamiliarity with your surroundings, or exhaustion related to jet lag and travel. Pickpockets and other criminals are aware of this, and they can view visitors as targets.

It is a great idea to have a map of the city you’re visiting, but also of the hotel itself. This is especially true in a large resort-style setting. It is also a good idea to stay on hotel grounds until you know the lay of the land in the city beyond.

When tired or distracted, make sure you avoid walks in dark areas. It’s also a good idea to keep your money and valuables in a safe in your room. Wearing theft-resistant items, like wallets that fasten under items of clothing, and only carrying what cash you need, will help limit your susceptibility to other security risks.

  • Slips and Falls

The most common locations for these types of accidents are as follows:

  • stairways and ramps
  • terraces and landings
  • parking lots
  • bathrooms (exiting tub, etc.)

Experts advise that you pay attention to the availability of guardrails, non-slip surfaces, and landing areas, and plan your routes accordingly. Take special care when dealing with dimly lit stairs and hallways, too.

  • Food Poisoning

A lot of people are excited by the chance to try something new on vacation, and food and drinks are no exceptions. To begin with, it is a good idea to check the quality of the food served. If your eggs were not well made, it may not be the right place to try a riskier item like oysters. Speaking of shellfish, it can be dangerous to try foods you have never ingested, especially those with a higher risk of allergic reaction. Most hotels pride themselves on their dining, and it’s fun to experience an unusual flavor, but it is wise to follow your instincts and only eat what seems safe.

  • Other (struck by objects, defective products, etc)

Sometimes there is just bad luck, even on vacation! Even if the accident is a rare one, it is still worthwhile to confer with a lawyer about your rights and your chances in court. Hopefully, though, you won’t need to worry about a thing besides enjoying a great summer trip.
